Green Sheep Studios was founded by

Susan Walker, after studying fiber arts as a Professional Craftsperson at Haywood Community College. Susan had developed a passion for fiber arts while volunteering in Israel in 1997. She was visiting with a collegue who was an archaeologist when she was shown a drop spindle dating to the time of Abraham and Sarah of the Bible. When she returned home she began to research drop spinning and the bug bit! But, truthfully, Susan's passion for fiber arts goes back to her childhood when she was introduced to weaving on lap looms and to sewing by her mother. As a lifelong seamstress and artist Susan has had a passion for fiber arts, from knitting and crocheting to spinning and weaving.

She decided to "go pro" in 2009 after working with a Maasai tribe on the border of Kenya and Tanzania, at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. While working with the tribal community Susan realized that the women needed a means of income which would allow them to provide their families with medicine, educations, good nutrition, and housing. Susan was very sensitive to the needs of the tribe, and also to not interfereing with traditional crafts or work. Research proved that Maasai do not have a tradition of weaving and the women were very excited at the hope of having a weaving school. The weaving school in Kenya will be an extension of Green Sheep Studios, with the goods being sold at fair market value and providing fair wages to the women who will work for themselves within a co-operative unr
